Yo Joe! A Real American Hip-Hop Musical The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Oct. 15 2011

This "hip-hop musical" from Red Star Studio Productions lovingly spoofs the animated G.I. Joe cartoons of the 1980s, using copyright-friendly name substitutions like "U.S. Joe." (The villainous Cobra posse becomes "Python.") Some of the performers have serviceable comic chops, and Jay Gish's script does a decent job churning out physical bits, one-liners, running gags, and throwaways. But the cast is uneven, and director David Flora lets the pace sag and sag. Musically, Yo Joe is a crime against hip-hop: Gish's music and rhymes are lackluster, and nobody onstage can rap. Not one number here can stand up even to "The Super Bowl Shuffle" as recorded by the 1985 Chicago Bears. --Dan Weissmann
