Yossi | Chicago Reader

Rated NR 84 minutes 2012

Israeli director Eytan Fox depicts modern gay life and contemporary Tel Aviv with sympathy and knowing insight, and he excels at creating casual rapport among actors; yet in film after film he undermines these gifts with hamfisted melodramatic plotting and unconvincing shifts in tone. This one revisits a character from his military romance Yossi & Jagger (2002) ten years after that story concluded. Now a successful heart surgeon, Yossi (Ohad Knoller) continues to mourn his lover who died in combat and feels guilt for never having informed the man's parents that their son was gay. The first half, presenting Yossi's lonely day-to-day routine, is Fox's subtlest and most affecting filmmaking to date, but when the character goes on vacation and meets a cute younger man, the film becomes a cloying wish-fulfillment fantasy. In Hebrew with subtitles.
