Subpar Chinese food in a room that looks like a 60s airport cocktail lounge.
With electric blue chairs and booths, stark white walls, and a chrome bar, the interior of Young's, a Chinese restaurant at Irving Park and Ashland, reminds me of a 60s airport cocktail lounge. The food, appropriately, reminds me of airline fare: bland, unlovely, and largely unappetizing. On a recent visit, the gravy served with the orange chicken tasted exactly like the gravy served with the Szechuan Fish: a muddy pool of oyster sauce. The appetizers were a little better: the shrimp toasts were fat and fresh, as were the pork dumplings. The drinks were superb and beautifully put together by the friendly bartender. Stay away from the wine, though. They're selling a bottle of Yellowtail Shiraz -- yes, the one you found at Jewel for $6 -- for over $20.
