Your Funniest Friends

When: Last Saturday of every month. Continues through Oct. 20 2012

The show is described as a "mix of music, stand-up, and sketch," but comedy collective Your Funniest Friends went straight stand-up when I saw them at the Joynt, a "retro" spot just killing itself to be swanky. Only three of the troupe's five members performed (Jeff Steinbrunner, Matt Riggs, and Lane Pieschel), with friends of the Friends David Drake and Clark Jones filling the other spots—and outdoing their hosts. Drake opened and rattled enthusiastically through ex-girlfriend and alcoholism material, his voice and facial expressions offering a quirky, magnetic cross between Jack Black and Bobcat Goldthwait. Jones was the best of the night, applying his south-side swagger to a spot-on joke about amped crackheads guiding drivers into easy parking spots. The least awkward of the YFFs, Steinbrunner riffed nicely with the crowd, displaying a comfortable wit. The weekly gig needs to catch a rhythm, and I would've liked to have seen some sketch. But at the price, it's worth checking out. —Kevin Warwick
