Youth in Revolt

Rated R 2010

Nerdy nice guy Michael Cera finds the girl of his dreams (Portia Doubleday) while camping with his sluttish mom (Jean Smart) and her boorish boyfriend (Zach Galifianakis), but the vacation ends before he can shed his demoralizing virginity. Scheming to win back his lady love, he creates for himself a bad-boy alter ego whose impulsive criminality soon has him on the run from the law. Mildly diverting rather than uproarious, the film still stands out among teen sex comedies for its low-key approach to antic material. The best bits are supplied by Justin Long as Doubleday's stoner brother and Adhir Kalyan as the hero's plummy-accented coconspirator. Director Miguel Arteta directed this adaptation of a cult novel by C.D. Payne; with Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, and Fred Willard. R, 90 min.
