Youth Lagoon, Majical Cloudz 18+ Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Wed., May 15, 9 p.m. 2013

Majical Cloudz began as the murkily psychedelic sound-collage project of Ontario native Devon Welsh. Early last year he expanded his one-man show to include instrumentalist Matthew Otto, then reissued an album, II, that would become his breakthrough release: it earned him glowing Pitchfork reviews, helped him land a deal with Matador, and turned Majical Cloudz into one of the most chatted-about bands happening. The ten torchy, moody songs on the upcoming follow-up, Impersonator (out May 26), embed Welsh’s Michael Hutchence-esque tenor voice in arrangements that smooth out II’s rough, busy edges and replace them with a mannered but warm electronic minimalism. The album is sure to amplify the buzz surrounding the group by several notches at least. —Miles Raymer Youth Lagoon headlines.
