Zenith | Chicago Reader

Rated NR 93 minutes 2010

In a nameless city of the near future (cleverly assembled out of industrial salvage) a former doctor sets out to investigate the global conspiracy his estranged father once documented on a series of cryptic videotapes. Writer-director Vladan Nikolic (billed as "experiment supervisor") makes the most of his meager budget with a lot of inventive production design and lighting, but once his story gets moving, it's barely comprehensible. The central conspiracy—involving genetic engineering and the Illuminati, or something—is only sketchily imagined, and Nikolic seems unsure how to direct his actors, failing to sustain a consistent tone from one scene to the next. This is underground cinema at its least self-aware, demonstrating an independent sensibility in its creativity as well as its cluelessness.
