California’s Green Dot Corporation began selling prepaid debit cards in 2000, and by 2013 “green dot” had become such an important part of the life and language of inmates in the U.S. prison system that the Baltimore Sun wrote about it. Not so coincidentally, at the beginning of this year west-side rapper Zernardo “ZMoney” Tate dropped a mixtape called Green Dot—or rather Tate’s team released it for him. The MC was actually behind bars at the time, which becomes pretty obvious during the mumbled opener, a recording of one of his phone calls from jail (hence the track’s name, “Live From the County”). Tate’s rap game was thrown off last year when he was incarcerated after violating the terms of his probation for driving on a suspended licensed. Green Dot is a warm-up for the MC’s delayed three-part mixtape, 3mpire, and he sounds as effervescently cool as ever. On “Drug Star” words seem to melt as Tate delivers them, and his swashbuckling, magnetic flow can create a feeling of bliss I rarely associate with the high-end fashion he so often references. —Leor Galil
