Zu Warriors | Chicago Reader

Zu Warriors

Hong Kong director Tsui Hark remakes his early hit Zu Warriors of Magic Mountain (1983), and the result is, by popular consensus, one of his weakest films. This effects-laden 2001 fantasy contains a few characteristic moments of blissful incoherence—mainly during the climactic fight scenes—but for the most part, it listlessly recycles familiar moments from Tsui's other movies. The nonstop CGI effects are glaringly phony (most of this was shot in front of a green screen, and it shows); if they didn't look so expensive and excessively detailed, they might merit attention in a so-bad-they're-good sort of way. With Louis Koo, Kelly Lin, and Sammo Hung. In Cantonese with subtitles.
